David Connacher, Marketing Manager of West Fraser, discusses the important relationship between architect and client
Architects are much more than designers, specifiers and coordinators; they are drivers, guides and teachers who should communicate their knowledge and facilitate conversations with their clients and networks. To achieve the best possible outcomes for their clients and projects, they must step out of their silo and be inquisitive and ready to explore methods, materials and design innovations while keeping up to date with statutory requirements.
From the outset, it is important to recognise that every client has a roadmap. Sadly, not all decision makers realise the strategic value that architects can bring to helping them follow this path. Too often, key decisions are made before the voice of the architect is heard, sometimes through lack of foresight but also because there is a perception that good design adds cost and poses risks to delivering projects on time and on budget.
In reality, the most successful projects are those where the client involves the architect early on and a mutual understanding of shared values and trust has been allowed to develop. The relationship should be one of collaboration and partnership where time is spent grasping the implications of the brief and the architect is not afraid to challenge ideas and preconceptions.
A project that evolves in this way will embed understanding and help populate the client’s roadmap with attributes that embrace the shared vision, helping to drive issues of sustainability and draw in influencers and advocates. This holistic integration not only helps the client realise their ambitions, but it can also be good for those living and working within the environment that is created, as well as for the wider community and the planet. For the architect, working with a receptive client is productive and rewarding and can only drive the ultimate ambition of good design that adds value for the people and places that it serves.
