We are currently on track to have achieved a 56% reduction in our carbon footprint by 2025 against a 2019 baseline.
This year’s World Environment Day, https://www.worldenvironmentday.global/about/theme-host, is hosted by North Korea and looks at plastic pollution specifically. But we don’t need a day in June (5th to be precise!) to focus on the planet. We look at West Fraser’s sustainability goals – across a variety of environmental, social and governance targets – every day and are achieving our goal of being a sustainability leader. There is so much to say and we thought we’d touch on a couple to whet your appetite for more blogs!
The busy environmental teams at West Fraser ensure that all our wood fibre is sourced from responsibly managed forests via stringent due diligence assessment; carrying chain of custody means stocks are conserved by replanting and carefully planned cropping. We are also investing heavily in a new rail head for the Inverness plant and buy only renewable electricity for the site which has switched from gas power to biomass for its drying process; and is now using electric forklift trucks. Across the group, ESG commitments are being delivered, and Inverness is on course to attain its 2030 targets next year.
Environmentally, we are delivering on many fronts; not only helping to lock carbon into well-engineered, low-maintenance, high-efficiency sustainable panel products like SterlingOSB Zero, but we are doing so in a way which is supporting forestry and wider ecological efforts. Across Europe, the company’s target is to become carbon negative by 2030. We are currently on track to have achieved a 56% reduction by 2025 against a 2019 baseline.
All West Fraser panel products produced in the UK are net carbon negative and manufactured in mills that have obtained the coveted environmental ISO 14001 certification. Responsibly sourced, the panels are FSC® certified (C012533) and created from locally grown timber, cutting embodied carbon from transportation.
And one for the road………………..
A new journey in our carbon negative map is made by the eight new West Fraser-sponsored natural gas powered ‘eco trucks’, operating from Selco’s Minworth Delivery Hub. Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles emit up to 25% less carbon dioxide (CO2) and release fewer harmful pollutants into the air than traditionally powered vehicles; the collaboration highlights the connection between Selco’s sustainability goals and West Fraser’s Carbon Negative panels that promote sustainability from “tree to truck”.
